Biobanking Studies

In 2019, IIPAN and the International Agency for Research on Cancer formalized a collaboration to lead two multi-national nutrition biobanking studies.

More details about each biobanking study can be found below:

NICHE

Multi-National Nutritional Biobanking Program in Pediatric Oncology: InterNatIonal CHildhood Leukemia Microbiome/MEtabolome Cohort (NICHE)

Purpose of Study:

The primary aim of this study is to establish a biobank of demographic variables, lifestyle data, nutritional anthropometrics, and nutritional biological indices from children and adolescents in low- and middle-income countries with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The data and specimens will be obtained at diagnosis, sequential timepoints throughout treatment, and one year after completion of treatment. The proposed data and biological specimens will foster future studies on cancer progression and prognosis as well as toxicities during treatment, which may impact survivorship and late effects.

Participants:

Participants will be children and adolescents between 3 and 18 years of age with ALL receiving treatment at one of the participating centers.

EPICkids

Southern European Prospective Investigation into Childhood Cancer and Nutrition (EPICkids)

Purpose of Study:

The primary aim of this study is to establish a biobank of demographic variables, lifestyle data, quality of life, nutritional anthropometrics, and nutritional biological indices from Southern European children and adolescents with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) or brain tumors. The data and specimens will be obtained at diagnosis, sequential timepoints throughout treatment, and one year after completion of treatment. The data and biological specimens obtained will foster future studies on nutrition and childhood cancer, as well as establish a framework to develop evidence-based guidelines for European children with cancer.

Participants:

Participants will be children and adolescents between 3 and 21 years of age with ALL or favorable biology brain tumors receiving standard treatment at one of the participating centers in Spain, Italy, or Greece.
