Clinical Genetics

Overview

The Division of Clinical Genetics fellowship is accredited by the ACGME (Accrediting Council for Graduate Medical Education) and is open to physicians with a minimum of two years prior training in any ACGME-accredited residency program. The two-year categorical program was established in 1999, and accepts one candidate each year for training.

During the first 18 months fellows dedicate their time to clinical training, rotating through various subsections of the division, including dysmorphology, biochemical genetics, cytogenetics, molecular genetics, and cancer genetics. During the remaining six months fellows dedicate their efforts to research.

The training program includes intensive didactic lectures taught by division faculty members and guest faculty members from various departments at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC). Fellows actively participate in weekly divisional conferences, where they present and discuss complex cases drawn from their pool of patients.

CUIMC is a tertiary institution in the northern Manhattan neighborhood, Washington Heights. Fellows are exposed a mix of common genetic conditions such as Down syndrome as well as highly complex, rare conditions. At the completion of their training, graduates from our program are capable of diagnosing and caring for patients with complex genetic problems, and are eligible for certification in clinical genetics by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics.

How to Apply

Applications to our fellowship are processed through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) system. Materials are accepted starting in July for fellowship positions beginning the following year. Those who wish to apply must be board eligible or board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. Please note that a completed application includes:

• Completed ERAS forms
• Three letters of recommendation, including one letter from the applicant's department chairman or residency director
• Curriculum vitae
• Personal statement
• Additional information, such as USMLE transcript and photo, are recommended

Acceptances to the fellowship are made through the Pediatric Specialties Fall Match of the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). Please refer to the NRMP website for details about the match submission deadline.
